Calvin Coolidge

John Calvin Coolidge, Jr. (4 July 1872 – 5 January 1933) was the 30th President of the United States, holding the office from 2 August 1923 to 4 March 1929. He had previously served as the 29th Vice President under Warren G. Harding.

Coolidge was a Republican from Vermont, but became involved in politics in Massachusetts, eventually becoming Governor of that state. He was an unexpected choice as Harding's running mate in the 1920 Presidential election. Coolidge became President on Harding's death and was replaced as Vice President by Charles G. Dawes.

Coolidge was known as a small government conservative. He was also known as a man of few words, which earned him the nickname "Silent Cal." There is a common story (although its truth cannot be reliably determined) that a young guest at a White House dinner bet Coolidge that she would be the only one to get more than two words out of him all night; Coolidge supposedly replied quietly, "You lose."

Coolidge was reluctant to get involved in foreign adventures. He presided over a period of great prosperity for most in the United States. He stood down at the 1928 Presidential election and was succeeded by Herbert Hoover.
