Harry S. Truman
Harry S. Truman (8 May 1884 – 26 December 1972) was the 33rd President of the United States, holding the office from 12 April 1945 to 20 January 1953. Previously he was the 34th Vice President under Franklin D. Roosevelt, becoming President on Roosevelt's death.
Truman was a former US Army National Guard artillery officer from Missouri, who became involved in Democrat politics after the First World War. He was a Senator for Missouri from 1935 to 1945.
Truman was President through the last stages of the Second World War, and took the decision to use atomic weapons against Japan. He also had to make decisions about the Korean War and Berlin Airlift.
While President, Truman was involved in the foundation of NATO and the United Nations, and ordered security measures that removed many confirmed or suspected communist sympathisers from US government jobs. However his administration was plagued by corruption among senior officials, which contributed to Eisenhower's election victory in 1952.
